Fassfern, June–July 2008

Thursday 26 June

A leisurely drive from Leeds to Teesdale, and on past Glasgow to Arrochar, where I spent a couple of nights at the Lochside Guest House on the shores of Loch Long.

Friday 27 June

Set out to climb Beinn Narnain and Beinn Ime, but gave up after doing the first of these as the weather deteriorated.

On the way down from Beinn Narnain, the cloud briefly lifted to give a glimpse of The Cobbler.

Creative use of an old tree stump: the beautifully carved eagle points the way to a lochside picnic area.

Saturday 28 June

Drove around parts of Argyll before heading up to Fassfern House on Loch Eil, where I spent a week with "the usual suspects".

Sunday 29 June

Walked along the shore of Loch Shiel to Sgurr Ghiubhsachain, which we climbed. The day started out fine and sunny, but that didn't last long. Low cloud, rain, hail and a ferocious wind prevented photography. Allan and Eric went on to climb Sgorr Craobh a' Chaorainn, but the rest of us were content to make do with Sgurr Ghiubhsachain, returning along the valley of the Allt na Cruaiche.

Monday 30 June

Weather still bad. Went for a forest walk in the woods around Fassfern House in the morning. Watched Wimbledon on the television in the afternoon. No photos.

Tuesday 1 July

Still wet. Drove up Glen Nevis and walked as far as the bridge at Steall.
